A joggling board is a true Southern original—long, springy, and designed to gently sway as you sit, relax, and enjoy the moment. Supported by two handcrafted stands and secured with traditional hardwood pegs, each board offers a soft, rhythmic bounce that feels instantly calming. It’s part bench, part rocker, and entirely unique. Whether placed on a porch, patio, or garden, a joggling board naturally invites people to gather, talk, and unwind.
Rooted in Lowcountry Tradition
The story of the joggling board begins in the South Carolina Lowcountry in the early 1800s. The first known version appeared around 1804 at Old Fields Plantation in Summerville. As the story goes, it was created to mimic a therapeutic “spring board,” using the natural flexibility of local Southern Yellow Pine.
From there, joggling boards became a cherished fixture throughout the South—symbols of hospitality, comfort, and connection. Families used them to relax on warm evenings. Children played on them for hours. Couples often courted on joggling boards, each beginning on opposite ends and gradually “joggling” toward the center—where they’d meet. This sweet tradition sparked the long-held belief that a joggling board brings good luck in love.
A Classic Revived for Modern Living
While joggling boards faded from everyday use in the early 20th century, they’ve experienced a strong revival—thanks to their charm, heritage, and the simple joy they bring to any space. Today, they’re proudly found on Charleston porches, in historic homes, coastal inns, community spaces, and now in homes and businesses all over the country.
Why This Tradition Still Matters
A joggling board isn’t just furniture. It’s a feeling.
It’s the gentle sway at the end of the day. It’s the conversation that lasts a little longer. It’s a piece of Southern history brought to life with handcrafted quality and modern purpose.
Made from premium, untreated Southern Yellow Pine—chosen for its strength, flexibility, and resilience—each joggling board carries forward a tradition of craftsmanship meant to be enjoyed for generations.
If you’re looking to add comfort, character, and a touch of timeless Southern charm to your home, a joggling board does more than fill a space—it transforms it.

Each signature joggling board is 17″ deep (height depends on board length, with longer boards being taller), and is available in lengths from 4′ to 16′—so you can choose the perfect fit for your space and style. Every board is handcrafted from premium, kiln-dried Southern Yellow Pine—left untreated to ensure natural flexibility, exceptional resiliency, and long-lasting durability without exposure to harsh chemicals. The pegs are crafted from untreated hardwood for added strength and stability.
To keep your board safe for your home and family, we finish every piece using primers and paints with low volatile organic compounds (low-VOCs). The vast majority of VOCs are released during application and early drying, with only trace (if any) amounts once you receive your joggling board.
Each joggling board is handcrafted to order, resulting in subtle, one-of-a-kind features. These distinct details reflect the wood’s natural variations and true craftsmanship and will not impact strength, durability, or performance.
Due to most joggling boards using the same materials, it should be noted that pricing adjustments for shorter boards generally reflects differences in labor rather than materials.

Your joggling board will last longest and perform best in a covered, well-ventilated outdoor space on a solid, level surface (such as a porch, veranda, screened porch, or sunroom). These areas protect the wood from constant sun and rain while still letting you enjoy the board’s natural sway. With simple routine care, your board will stay beautiful, strong, and enjoyable for many years.
You can place it outdoors in an uncovered area, but expect to perform a bit more routine maintenance due to weather exposure.
Surface Requirements
Keep the board on a flat, level surface like decking, concrete, or pavers.
Avoid soft ground or uneven areas, which can cause the stands to shift or sink.
Weather & Environment
Moisture: Allow the board to dry fully after rain. Avoid standing water.
Sunlight: UV can fade paint, so shaded areas are ideal.
Airflow: Give the board enough space to breathe and dry naturally.
Basic Maintenance
Clean occasionally with mild soap and water.
Inspect your board every 6–12 months for loose pegs, worn paint, or shifting stands.
Repaint or refinish as needed—typically every 2–4 years in covered spaces and more often if fully outdoors. Use exterior-grade paint or sealant rated for wood flexibility and moisture control.

To choose the ideal joggling board size, start by measuring the space where you plan to place it. Along with the gentle rocking motion, remember that the curved rockers extend approximately 2–3" beyond each end of the board.
For longer board lengths (10’ or more), we recommend allowing an additional two feet of space—about one foot on each side—for comfortable movement.
For shorter boards (less than 10’), 1 to 1.5 feet of extra space (roughly 6–9" on each side) is typically sufficient.

To paraphrase Henry Ford, any color you want, as long as it’s Charleston Green! If not familiar, Charleston Green is a deep, almost-black shade of green with roots in the post–Civil War era. According to local lore, when federal troops supplied black paint for rebuilding, Charlestonians subtly altered it (as a matter of pride)—mixing in just enough yellow and blue to create a color that felt uniquely theirs. The result was a rich, elegant green so dark it reads nearly black in low light.
If desired, unfinished or custom color options are available (price adjustment applies).

A few things to keep in mind about your joggling board:
First, while each board is crafted from premium Southern Yellow Pine—a softwood prized for its natural bending strength and flexibility—it can break if excessive pressure is applied. Joggling boards are built for rocking, bouncing, and everyday enjoyment, and they can comfortably support multiple seated adults. For safety and longevity, we recommend a joggling weight limit of approximately 250–300 lbs (about two adults or four children). With a bit of use, you’ll get to know your board’s unique personality and natural limits.
Second, longer boards offer more spring, bounce, and flexibility than shorter versions. In other words, the shorter the board, the more limited its capacity and range of motion will be.
